“Whether anybody was home meant everything to a house. It was more than a major fact: it was the only fact … The family was the house’s soul.”― Jonathan Franzen, The Corrections

Lisa has a special place in my heart because she was my first ever maternity client. I remember how nervous I was. I had a little book with poses drawn out, only one lens to work with and pretended that I knew exactly what I was doing when I had very little idea at all! But Lisa remained so calm and encouraged me every minute of that shoot, she made me feel so capable. I don’t think many clients realize that without knowing it, they teach us little things and impact our careers positively in numerous ways!

Through the years I have had the tremendous honor of photographing Lisa’s growing family and it is was so special to me that I got to document the final one too! On a chilly January afternoon, I met Lisa in downtown Gwangju. She was dressed beautifully as always and we decided this time we would play around with big architecture and embrace the cold, bare trees. Here’s what we came up with in the short time the cold allowed us to be out:

A couple of months later, they welcomed their third little girl into the world! We decided to keep it at home because of the very bad air quality of this past spring. Also, when you have two other toddlers it’s much easier to keep them busy in their own home than in a studio. We set little Larkin up on her mattress next to some beautiful window light and made some beautiful photos of her and her family:

Thank you Lisa for trusting me over the years to document your beautiful family! It’s such a joy to me to look back on all your pictures and I feel incredibly lucky and honored to be a part of your story!
